The Manchester Water and Sewer Department (MWSD) is updating its water service line inventory and has sent notifications to customers with service lines containing lead, galvanized iron, and unknown pipe materials. This is in accordance with the EPA’s updated Lead and Copper Rule Improvements (LCRI), effective October 8, 2024, and aligns with the Town’s commitment to public health.
So far, over 500 customers have participated in our online survey to identify the pipes coming into their water meter.
The current inventory includes approximately 16,100 service lines. Of these, over 5000 have been classified as non-lead, 460 as galvanized iron which will require replacement, and less than 10 have been identified as lead. This leaves nearly 11,000 service lines with materials yet to be identified.
The goal is to replace all lead and galvanized service connections within ten years. The Town will pursue funding from the $3 billion allocated by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law to help cover replacement costs and will provide updates on these future funding opportunities.
The Mission of the Manchester Water and Sewer Department is to provide the highest possible water quality and customer service at the lowest possible cost while continuing our commitment to improving the infrastructure and our community's environment. We are committed to assisting our customers every step of the way to get the lead out and eliminate all potential exposure to lead pipe materials.
