Town Clerk Darryl Thames

It is with deep sadness and heavy hearts that the Town announces the passing of Town Clerk Darryl E. Thames, Sr., who passed away unexpectedly last night.

Mr. Thames served as the Town Clerk since January 2022, and prior to that served on the Board of Education since 2012, including as Board Chairman. During his tenure at the BOE, he helped champion the school reconstruction projects that will ensure all of Manchester’s youths learn in state-of-the-art facilities. As Town Clerk, Darryl worked on digitizing and making records electronically available, as well as ensuring that the office continued to recognize and value that it exists to serve the community, holding paramount a commitment to extraordinary customer service and providing a welcoming and helpful environment for the public.

“I am deeply saddened and shocked by the loss of my longtime friend and colleague Darryl Thames," said Mayor Jay Moran. “He was a tireless champion for the Manchester community and devoted his life to serving the public. From newly renovated public schools to the innovative and fresh ideas he brought to Town Hall, his legacy will live on for generations. On behalf of the entire Town of Manchester, we offer our deepest condolences to his family, friends, and colleagues.”

A loving husband, father, and grandfather, Clerk Thames lived in Manchester for over 25 years and was a proud graduate of Howard University.

“Darryl’s positive energy and attitude were a source of great joy for the staff in and around Town Hall, and he will be tremendously missed,” said Steve Stephanou Town Manager. "On behalf of all Town staff, we deeply mourn his loss and offer his family heartfelt condolences.”

“A champion for the students of Manchester, Mr. Thames made certain our system was focused on the whole child, supporting the development of programming in academics, culture and climate, race and equity, health and wellness, and food and nutrition," said Superintendent Matt Geary. He cared deeply about the students, families, and staff of Manchester Public Schools and worked diligently to promote the work of the schools.”
