Drowning is the second-leading cause of accidental death for children under the age of 14 in the United States. Research has shown that formal swimming lessons reduce the risk of childhood drowning by 88%. Swim lessons are life-saving resources, critical to public health and well-being, and should be taught year-round.
The Recreation Division is committed to increasing public awareness around swimming lessons and swim safety and ensuring access to programs and facilities for all Manchester residents.
The Learn to Swim program has long been a summer a tradition in the Town of Manchester. The Recreation Division takes pride in ensuring the Manchester community has the skills and knowledge to stay safe in and around water. We thrive on making sure we offer an array of sustainable lessons for ages 0-99. Drowning is the second-leading cause of accidental death for children under the age of 14 in the United States. The Recreation Division feels strongly that spreading the word about water safety and offering learn to swim activities is fundamental to a thriving community. Because of this, we are undertaking a campaign with a three-fold purpose:
- Provide access to learn to swim opportunities and water- based programming for those who can’t swim or won’t swim.
- Increase excitement around swimming and aquatic opportunities for those who can swim or are skilled swimmers.
- Educate about the importance of learning to swim as a life saving measure as well as a life-long leisure and wellness activity.
Our first initiative is this website. We hope you will view this space as a digital warehouse where you can engage with us and let your voices be heard when it comes to our Learn to Swim and Aquatic program. Use our interactive materials that will help you build connections with our program and staff and connect with updates regarding programming, special events, registration opportunities and more!
The second piece of our plan is a new brand and logo for our Learn to Swim programs. Our moto is “Learn, Swim, Thrive.” Why did we choose this moto:
Learn = Swimming is the only activity that can save your life or teach you how to save someone else’s. Water is everywhere. Being comfortable in the water is almost a necessity in life, because even if you don’t go to a pool regularly, you should be at ease near any body of water. We will continue to offer a variety of swim lessons for all age ranges.
Swim= The ability to swim is a life skill. We strive for a community where everyone has the knowledge or the skills to be able to get themselves or a loved one to safety.
Thrive= Swimming in any body of water develops confidence. Swimming gives people something to do where they’re truly in charge of how quickly they improve. We will continue to encourage all our participants to take what they learn from our programs and build on that confidence.
Over the coming weeks and months, you will see exciting new changes to our programs, pool operations and swim lessons as well as updates on this site and on our social media channels. We hope to see you at the pools this summer engaging in a learn to swim program, taking part in a family friendly special event, joining an aquatic fitness class or interacting with us online. We are ready, are you? LEARN. SWIM. THRIVE.
