Private Fire Hydrants and Water Main Requirements
Privately owned fire hydrants and water mains shall be inspected, tested, and maintained in accordance with the Connecticut State Fire Prevention Code and NFPA-25.

The following requirements shall be observed:
- A 36-inch clear space shall be maintained around the circumference of fire hydrants except as otherwise required or approved. (CSFPC 18.5.7.1)
- A clear space of not less than 60-inches shall be provided in front of each hydrant connection having a diameter greater than 2 1/2 inches. (CSFPC 18.5.7.2)
- Fire hydrants shall be inspected, flowed, and maintained annually by qualified personnel. Documentation of the testing shall be provided to the Manchester Fire Department, Fire Marshal’s Division. (NFPA-25 7.1.1.2) • Underground fire service mains shall be flow-tested every 5 years. (NFPA-25 7.1.1.2)
- Fire hydrants shall be marked with an approved flag or other device affixed to or proximate to the fire hydrant where required by the AHJ. (CSFPC 18.5.10.2)
- Hydrants shall be painted periodically. Paint for hydrants shall be high performance industrial coating alkyd enamel. Paint shall have a high gloss finish. Paint colors shall be Fire Hydrant Red (245385) for left-opening (counterclockwise) hydrants or Yellow (245488) for right-opening (clockwise) hydrants as manufactured by Rust-Oleum Corporation or approved equal. Surface preparation and paint application shall be in accordance with the manufacturer’s recommendations.
- Out of service hydrants shall be covered with a bag or have an “Out of Service” ring affixed. The Fire Marshal’s Division shall be notified of the out of service condition immediately. An email shall be sent to firemarshal@manchesterct.gov
