  • All Permits are through the town's online permitting portal.

Removal Requirements for Underground Storage Tanks

Home improvement contractors conducting residential underground heating oil storage tank (UST) removal or replacement must comply with the following:

  • Maintain liability insurance coverage of one million dollars ($1,000,000)
  • Successful completion of both of the following Department of Energy and Environmental Protection approved Hazardous Material Training Programs:
    1. Occupational Safety & Heath Administration’s (OSHA’s) 40-Hour Hazardous Waste Operations Emergency Response (HAZWOPER) Training per 29 CFR 1910.120, and subsequent annual 8-hr refresher training
    1. International Codes Council’s (ICC’s) UST Tank Decommissioning U2 Training

Note: UST refers to both a “residential underground heating oil storage tank system” and an “underground storage tank system” as defined in CT General Statutes 20-419.
