Death and mourning customs at the Historical Society

History Center.jpg

Connecticut Gravestone Network president Ruth Shapleigh-Brown will present stories, epitaphs, and history of our older cemeteries. Ruth, "has been involved in this work most of my life -- working to protect our buried history. Let us not forget all that has gone before us." Ruth will highlight the history of burial traditions and mourning practices from our early colonial times into the 20th century. We will also welcome Mary Carroll, a collector of Mourning Jewelry, who will bring an exhibit of jewelry from her collection and explain the pieces' history and symbolic meaning. Free. Donations welcome.
