Centering Indigenous Narratives in Education

Dr. Matthew Makomenaw, Director of the Native American Cultural Center and Assistant Dean at Yale College, will address the pervasive harm caused by Indigenous stereotypes. It will emphasize the detrimental effects of such stereotypes on Indigenous communities and the urgent need to dismantle them. However, the primary discussion will focus on uplifting Indigenous peoples, acknowledging their culture, strengths, and contributions. One of the key messages of the talk will be that Indigenous people belong in higher education. Increasing the visibility of their stories, experiences, and accomplishments is not only necessary but is also enriching for the entire educational landscape.
